Dr. Newell’s association with the Chenango Valley School District began when his family relocated from New Jersey to Hillcrest. He entered CVHS in the middle of 9th grade and attended from that point on until his graduation in June 1966. Following graduation, he enrolled in Hamilton College in Clinton, New York studying English Literature and Psychology. While at Hamilton, he enlisted in the National Guard of New York and served six years. He was honorably discharged in 1976 after attending OCS and obtaining his commission as a Second Lieutenant.

Before applying and being accepted for graduate school at Syracuse University, he taught English at Whitney Point High School and enrolled in a graduate college course at what was then Harpur College. He met his future wife, Patricia Gochee, while taking this course.

During his years at Syracuse University, he served in various capacities as a counselor and graduate assistant. He also did an internship at the Experimental Pre-K Program at East Syracuse-Minoa School District. He completed a master’s degree in School Psychology in 1974 and a Ph.D. in 1980. While at Syracuse, he also took courses and completed NYS certification as a school administrator.

His first job was at Jordan-Elbridge as a School Psychologist and Special Education Coordinator. His career also took him to Red Creek and Belleville-Henderson School Districts. His last employer was Carthage Central where he spent 21 years serving as middle school principal, elementary school principal, CSE chair and assistant to the superintendent. Following his retirement in 2008, he worked evaluating youth under the Benchmark Preschool and as an interim school psychologist for Thousand Islands and Carthage School Districts.

His professional associations and memberships include the School Administrators Association of New York, the Retired Educators of New York, the Watertown YMCA, the United Way of Jefferson County, St. Paul’s Catholic Church, the Orchestra of Northern New York, Change Club of Cornell Cooperative Extension, and the North Country Tennis Association.

Dr. Newell and his wife were married at Hendricks Chapel on the campus of Syracuse University in 1972 and have raised two beautiful daughters together.
