Concussion Management and Awareness

District Policy

Procedures for Student-Athletes:

  1. Report symptoms to a trusted adult such as a coach, trainer, PE teacher, nurse, parent, or guardian.
  2. Cooperate with removal from play and be evaluated by a coach, trainer, nurse, or physician.
  3. Participate in evaluation by medical or school personnel (coach, trainer, nurse, or physician).
  4. Share medical evaluation results with the school nurse.
  5. Follow a graded return-to-play plan, as directed by medical professionals.
  6. Report any returning symptoms to a coach, trainer, parent, guardian, school nurse, or PE teacher.

Procedures for Coach/PE Teacher/Trainer

  1. Observe the student for concussion signs and symptoms.
  2. If symptoms are present, immediately remove the student from play.
  3. Perform a sideline evaluation or refer the student to the school nurse for assessment.
  4. Report all injuries that happen during athletics or PE to the school nurse.
  5. Start a graded return-to-play plan only when the student is symptom-free and cleared by a physician.
  6. Monitor and document the student's progress throughout the return-to-play process.
  7. Report any recurring symptoms to the school nurse, athletic director, and the student’s family.

Procedures for Caregivers

  1. Inform the school nurse about any prior history of head injuries.
  2. Report any signs or symptoms of a concussion to the school nurse.
  3. Take the student for medical evaluation by a physician if concussion symptoms are present.
  4. Share the physician’s medical evaluation with the school nurse.
  5. Stay in communication with the school nurse as the student’s symptoms change or improve.

Procedures for School Nurse

  1. Serve as the point of contact for managing concussion or injury cases.
  2. Communicate physician’s orders to the athletic director (AD), school athletic trainer, and counselor.
  3. Conduct regular assessments of the student as needed.
  4. Maintain communication with the evaluating physician throughout recovery.
  5. Clear students for return to activities if there is no concussion diagnosis, or once they are cleared by a physician.

Procedures for Admin/Teacher/Counselor

  1. Meet with the family to create academic modification plans, if needed.
  2. Obtain administrator approval for any proposed plans.
  3. Communicate academic plans and updates to teachers, the student, and the family.
  4. Serve as a liaison between teachers, the student, and the family throughout the recovery process.

Procedures for Physicians

  1. Evaluate, diagnose, and develop a treatment plan for the student.
  2. Provide follow-up care and release the student from medical care when appropriate.
  3. Clear the student for return to play by lifting any activity restrictions.
  4. Must be a New York State (NYS) licensed physician.
