Lead Testing in School Drinking Water

June 20, 2025

Dear Chenango Valley families and staff,

As part of New York State requirements, and because we want to keep our school community informed, we are sharing an update on the results of our most recent routine water testing in district buildings.

This routine testing is done every few years to ensure that the water in our schools remains safe for students and staff. In this latest round of testing, a few specific water outlets were found to have lead levels above the state’s new safety limit for school drinking water (more than 5 parts per billion). For reference, the limit was previously 15 parts per billion.

These outlets were immediately turned off and will remain out of service until corrective actions are completed. All other drinking fountains and kitchen taps intended for drinking or cooking tested below the state’s action level and remain safe to use.

To put this in perspective: water can sometimes pick up small amounts of lead from older pipes or fixtures, especially when water hasn’t been used for a while. Testing helps us find any places where this might happen so we can take action. It is important to note that many of the outlets affected are sinks not typically used for drinking.

You can read the full official notice and lab results below.

If you have any questions, please contact our Director of Facilities, Andrew Burlingame, at (607) 762-6860 or [email protected]

Thank you for your ongoing support as we continue to maintain safe, healthy spaces for all of our students and staff.
Sincerely,

Dr. Larry Dake
Superintendent of Schools
